IRON CHIC (US – Side One Dummy)

While the more obvious side of punk rock tends to be its discontent, New York’s Iron Chic use their melodic punk to evoke the genre’s sense of community and oneness unlike any other. Formed in 2008, the band cultivated a driving and infectious sound packed with so many singalong choruses and who-oh-ohs that it’s hard not to want to dive in and be a part of the action. Pair a sound like that with songs whose lyrics tackle the disappointment, angst, and uncertainty of life, and you have a virtual maelstrom of emotive and engaging punk reminiscent of bands like the Bouncing Souls.

MARTHA (UK – Fortuna Pop Records / Dirtnap Records)

Martha are a four-piece DIY indie/punk band from Pity Me, a village in County Durham in the North East of England. They describe themselves as queer, straight edge, vegan and anarchist. They have no designated frontperson and all contribute vocals. Two members of Martha also play in the band ONSIND, and another leads the band No Ditching. Catchy indiepop with hints of garagerock.

Melodic, melancholic guitar parts alternated with heavy drums and noise. With their 7” out and a bunch of songs written for a new album, this four piece knows how to bring a tight and energetic live show. Punk, shoegaze, grunge, whatever. They have it all.
